The Progeny Film Festival is an annual event hosted by Virginia Tech’s School of Performing Arts in Blacksburg, Virginia. Our mission is to foster high-quality, Do-It-Yourself-spirited filmmaking in the region, especially by independent filmmakers and students.

Cash prizes will start at $250 and be awarded by a panel of judges in the categories of:

  1. Fiction
  2. Documentary
  3. Student (college)
  4. Special 2017 Theme (The Spirit of Appalachia)
  5. Screenwriting Competiton*

There will also awards for audience-choice and best high school. Entry fee is $15 for independent filmmakers, $10 for college students, and free for high school students.

*This year, Progeny is introducing a new contest that is not production related. The Screenwriting category is a writing contest with the winner taking home $200 and the School of Performing Arts producing the screenplay under the direction of Charles Dye. The winners will be announced at the festival and their films produced at a later date.

We are currently accepting submissions until July 10th, 2017. Learn about our application by clicking HERE.
